In total 7 1/2 miles of roads were improved this past summer.

From Steve McNeal, Our County Commissioner
I am writing after the Allegan County Board of Commissioners just passed our Allegan County 2008 Budget on time. We recognize that the local economy will continue to struggle next year and government is not immune to the economic challenges that our citizens are facing. Accordingly, the Allegan County 2008 Budget maintains services by following a very simple Resolution that I authored, which requires the Board to limit compensation increases for employees to less than any revenue increase the county receives. In fact, by holding the line on employee compensation the last three years, we have added several million in reserves which will most likely be used to significantly reduce, or eliminate, any millage request to construct a new jail for Allegan County.
The new jail and sheriff administration building will be constructed at our county complex at Dumont Lake. After an exhaustive evaluation of dozens of sites, the Board sub-committee recommended our Dumont Lake complex over any site in, or around, the city of Allegan. By using land that we already own, we will avoid purchasing and improving another site. The savings on land and improvements alone are projected to be more than two million dollars. In addition, the support that other county departments provide to the new jail and sheriff administration buildings will be much more efficient, because these support services are currently located at Dumont Lake.
Our new and expanded Senior Services in Allegan County is up and running! If you are over 60 years old and would like information on what assistance is available, please call our Allegan County Commission on Aging offices at (269) 673-3333. Our medical care facilities at Dumont Lake are undergoing an expansion and renovation so they can provide a residential atmosphere for the residents there. Our medical care facility continues to improve and provide excellent service and facilities for our residents. Contact them at (269) 673-2102 for information. |
